This week’s news was dominated by financial results, the introduction of the Transportation Bill in Congress, and economic indicators.

I was reminded recently of an old United Airlines commercial, where a company president assembles his entire team to discuss how their oldest customer had just fired the firm. Cargo theft incidents increased 8.4 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, according to the 2011 US Cargo Theft Report published last week by FreightWatch International. The 974 cargo thefts recorded last year was the highest on record.

Here are some interesting statistics from the report:

  • Almost 88 percent of the cargo thefts were full truckload or container thefts.
  • Food/Drinks was the most targeted product

More than a decade ago, our family started ordering our groceries from an online grocer that delivered right to our house. In fact, they put a full-size refrigerator in our garage so that perishable food would not spoil while we were at work. We loved it. Then the company went broke. They’re gone, but we still have the refrigerator.
